Commission number one!
Well, I got my first order last week! I'm building with wood again!!!
Nice to have all this indoor space to work in during the evenings, out of the weather! And to think that I contemplated building a 5.3m long boat in a 5m long tent (yes, the tent was shorter than the boat!!), in a garden, in wet England!! And did it too!! No wonder it took more than three years to complete!

More mountain fires!
This time near Grabouw, and going over to Sir Lowry's Pass:
But, not like the last one, the 'South Easter' was absolutely howling all day, so the choppers were out:
By this morning, we couldn't see any smoke, but as the wind was blowing away from us, that doesn't meant it wasn't still burning over the ridge!
Pretty scary stuff when you're up close, which we were for a bit (no photo's), and it makes me wonder what kind of hell has been going on in Oz recently.

Road tyres and sand!?
I mean really, was this a sensible thing to try?
4x4 is one thing, but the wrong tyres, no rope, no jack, no winch??
The holes don't look deep, but once the wheels started spinning, we were kinda buggered!
The second attempt up the hill got us within five metres of the top before digging in, and trying to reverse back down just spun the tyres the other way, so another solution was needed - we (me and sister who was down for the weekend), packed sticks behind the tyres, which enabled us to reverse on to them, then filled the holes we had dug and packed sticks there too, then managed to drive forward for about a metre, maybe a metre and a half before digging more holes with the tyres.
After four of theses sessions (limited amount of sticks available), we were over the top and on our way to the pub!!
Several lessons learned, but mostly; getting stuck out there with a couple of bottles of coke between us is not really an option. Several litres of water will now stay in the car!

Tried to go the beach today...
...but decided to stay on the safe side of the law.
Still we had a good drive, got the 4x4 gearbox working (though I'm sure we would have been fine in 2x4!) but had a nice drive anyway.
Just as an aside comment, the tyres on that car have now been through France, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, England, and have now had a bit of fun in the Southern hemisphere too!

Stormy night!
I spent the best part of an hour out there with my camera and tripod, and this is the best I could get:

Tailgaters should be shot!
Drove to Hermanus this morning, and on the way there saw a snake (probably a Cape Cobra; too skinny and long and fast for a Puff Adder) cross the road in front of us, over to the other lane so we missed it. Taxi coming towards us saw it, and managed to move across to avoid it, but when I looked in the rear view mirror I could see brake lights from the five cars following him.
On the way back, we saw the remains. One more dead snake, that if the b*****ds had kept a decent following distance from each other they would have managed to avoid it. The first car did, maybe the second, but after that, no chance!!
Yeah, it makes me angry!

Isn't it a bugger that after thirty metres of fencing (standard roll), one ends up 1.5 metres short!? See left edge of fence (click to enlarge)!
Hands are sore, overheated doing this in 30º (again) with no cloud cover, but developing a wonderful tan!!!
